How left-handed are you? This simple survey will tell you how left-handed you are and give you an overall score you can compare to the thousands of others who have taken the test.

You can see our analysis of the test results so far here.

So go ahead and tick the options for which hand you use for various things and see how you rate overall…

How left handed are you?

We all have our own view of whether we are left-handed or not and, ultimately, that is the the test - if you consider yourself to be left-handed then you are! That said, most people are mixed in their handedness and it is rare for people to do everything with just one hand or side of their body. Our test below will show which side you use for various tasks and how consistent you are in the use of your hands. It will also give you give you an overall score out of 100 for your level of left-handedness and you can see how you compare to other people. To get the overall score, we have weighted the various factors so, for example, writing left-handed gets a far higher weighting in the overall score than which way you hold a bat two-handed (see this page for more information on how we did this).

  • Use of left hand

I dodalmost everything with my left hand. I’m really glad I didn’t grow up in a time when southpaws were forced to use their right hands. I feel clumsy using my right hand

  2. Ray Clarke says:

I often hear right-handed people saying that most ‘lefties’ are clever. This may be true because of two reasons: 1) the way our brains are ‘wired’ or 2)Having to think & adapt from birth to coping in a right-handed world. We have to think of ways to use everyday items/equipment designed for right handers.
I am a 63 year old male & have been an electrician for 40 years, often coming across electrical appliances designed strictly for right-handers. ( dials, buttons, switches on the right-hand side.)
I still resist the impulse to put out my left hand when greeting/meeting someone – I often bump noses/heads when a right-handed female attempts a casual greeting kiss on the cheek – I go the ‘wrong’ way. Have a good Lefty Day!!

  3. Shirley Hammond says:

I come from a family of eleven who are all left handed. My mother was also left handed but my father was right handed. Two sisters were encouraged to change in elementary school and now have terrible handwriting skills. One sister is was very artistically talented but once her teacher made her change hands she quit creating beautiful pictures because it was so hard for her.

  4. Liza says:

I am 90% Seriously Left Handed, but I use my right hand to control the computer mouse and also use a 10-key calculator/keyboard. A few years ago I was diagnosed with tendonitis, on my right hand!

  5. Daniel Gutierrez says:

I’m 14 and I’m a natural lefty, but I shoot right handed in basketball when I’m suppose to shoot left, and I play baseball but I can hit both left and right, I pitch left handed too, maybe lefty’s are just better at sports, lefty’s rule

  6. Jim says:

Serated Knives computer mouse and computer number keypads.agrhhh
At school I used to get hit with a ruler and made to write right handed than told of because I was slow and my writing sloped to one side. Rebelled and now only print with my left hand.

  7. Ebe Foster says:

I iron right handed as the early irons were made for right handed people. Flex dictated how you held iron.
I can’t use left handed scissors if they are truly left handed because I learned to use right handed scissors when I was young, however, I can use right handed scissors with left handed grips! What comfort!
My mother learned how to tie shoelaces left handed so that she could teach me! How considerate is that?
Test says I’m 95% left handed.

  8. Elaine says:

I too use scissors right handed, simply because I didn’t have a left handed pair. I learned to knit right handed because my mother had a terrible job trying to teach me to knit with my left hand.
Love the left handed ticks on the test…

  9. Michelle says:

Interesting survey that had me batting bits of paper to see which hand was batting dominant (left 🙂 )! I think social conditioning as others have mentioned has a lot to do with which hand ends up dominant in some tasks.
I eat right handed because a teacher at school stood behind me and kept placing the knife and fork in right handed way every lunchtime until I did it automatically (however she forgot about the spoon and I use a spoon with my left hand!).
using knives for food prep: if slicing down onto chopping board I use my left hand but if I hold the food(apple or carrot etc.)and slice upwards into hand I use right hand.
peeling veg towards me, right hand, peeling away left hand!?
phone I use left handed if I need to write notes i’ll hold phone in right hand to left ear.
All my left handed friends use right handed scissors in left hand except me I use them right handed. . .

  10. Suzanne Griffiths says:

I use an iron in my left hand and before the advent of irons with central cords I struggled with the cord sticking out of the right side of the iron and catching across my body as I ironed. My friends are always amused by seeing me iron on the ‘wrong’ side of the ironing board
I’m 62 and I have always used scissors in my left hand consequently I find left handed scissors difficult to use but I do have scissors with left handed grips which makes cutting a lot more comfortable and nobody rzight handed ever pinches them as they are uncomfortable for them to hold!!
When I was at primary school in 1950’s the dinner ladies always took my spoon out of my left hand when I was eating pudding and put it in my right hand, as soon as they had moved on I switched it back to my left!
