This simple survey will tell you how left-handed you are and give you an overall score you can compare to the thousands of others who have taken the test.
You can see our analysis of the test results so far here.
So go ahead and tick the options for which hand you use for various things and see how you rate overall…
How left handed are you?
We all have our own view of whether we are left-handed or not and, ultimately, that is the the test - if you consider yourself to be left-handed then you are! That said, most people are mixed in their handedness and it is rare for people to do everything with just one hand or side of their body. Our test below will show which side you use for various tasks and how consistent you are in the use of your hands. It will also give you give you an overall score out of 100 for your level of left-handedness and you can see how you compare to other people. To get the overall score, we have weighted the various factors so, for example, writing left-handed gets a far higher weighting in the overall score than which way you hold a bat two-handed (see this page for more information on how we did this).
My mum said I was left-handed in writing. But I was taught using right hand to write so that might affects which hand I use spoon for eating and even other tools.
For scissors, I think scissors are designed for right-handed.
Hi, I don’t feel my result can be a good estimate. My reasons for thinking this is because for many of the answers the only options you gave me were left or right. I needed another option, because with some things I use my left. However for many things you questioned I wasn’t able to give an accurate answer because had there been a ‘both’ option it would be more accurate I feel. For example with all racquet sports I literally swap my racquet between my left and right hands depending on which direction the ball/shuttle cock. I don’t think, I just do it. When canoeing I swap which hand I lead with changing g automatically when the situation calls for it. Same with catch, golf, darts. Does this mean I’m actually ambidextrous? I’d be very interested to understand more about this. Many thanks, Regards, Leah
Hi Leah, I found the same problem with the questionnaire. It definitely needs a “both” or “either” option! I was born a lefty but was forcibly switched in school. This turned me into a “clumsy righty”, who automatically uses her left hand for most things, such as reaching for doorknobs and throwing snowballs. (I am a dead shot with the left, and my golf swing improved immensely when a friend loaned me his l-h clubs!) Recently my right arm was out of commission for a while, forcing me to embrace my left-handedness. I can now print (writing not so much), slice and dice, and much more. I do have to think about it, though. The way you describe your ability to swap back and forth without thinking, I would say you are definitely ambidextrous,
I was the only left handed in my family growing up and this was when lefties were thought to be evil. I was taught everything by right handlers, so I learned to use my right hand . Therefore I throw a ball right handed. I do bat left handed. I can use either foot to kick it depends on what I’m kicking. I’m not very good at things using my right hand but my left hand is not good either because it wasn’t used and developed as my dominate.
I am able to use my right but prefer to use left as it deals more natural .we have to adapt to tools and equipment
How did I receive a 90% Left Handed score when the only non Left is my DOMINATE EYE?
Some of the things like scissors being held with my right hand, are caused by there not being left handed scissors for me growing up, and just is me adapting to the right handed world. Still a good quiz though.
When I was in 2nd grade myself and girl were commanded by t he nun to come up to the front. i thought aw shit, what did i do wrong this time. so we just stood there not knowing why. The nun told us to hold up our hands. then it dawned on us///. we had Scmeared our left had with pencil lead. the whole class howled with laughter. i can remember this like it was yesterday. WE JUST COULD NOT HELP IT! no matter how we tried. always went back to being a lefty. Same thing with positioning at a dining table.
The answer to two of questions are not relevant to lefthandedness.
If you hold your phone with your right hand you can take notes with your left, meaning lefthanded people SHOULD hold their phones with their right hand.
Holding bats, hockey sticks and golf clubs are not coded for lefthandedness either. The most well known Swedish golf player plays ”right” even though he is in fact lefthanded. I would too. And there are righthanded icehockey players that hold their sticks to the right. So I consider myself 100% lefthanded due to this
I was a left handed writer and cutter as a young child, but teachers made me use my right hand. I’m mostly deaf in my left ear, so use my right ear for the phone, which also hit on my score. Enjoyed the fun of this survey.
I’m 90% “gimp”-handed (Ha!)!! I’m VERY left-handed. The only thing I can do right-handed is use a softball bat and drive a stick. I can also write using my right hand, but I must give credit to my kindergarten teacher for that ability. I wrote a lot of my letters backwards, so, she would try and force me to use my right hand. Just feels retarded to me when I do it, lol. Oddly, I can freely write backwards with ease using my left. It never gets old when other people notice that I’m a lefty. It’s, like, they have an OMG awkward reaction of surprise. I find it hilarious.
