You can see our analysis of the test results so far here.

So go ahead and tick the options for which hand you use for various things and see how you rate overall…

How left handed are you?

We all have our own view of whether we are left-handed or not and, ultimately, that is the the test - if you consider yourself to be left-handed then you are! That said, most people are mixed in their handedness and it is rare for people to do everything with just one hand or side of their body. Our test below will show which side you use for various tasks and how consistent you are in the use of your hands. It will also give you give you an overall score out of 100 for your level of left-handedness and you can see how you compare to other people. To get the overall score, we have weighted the various factors so, for example, writing left-handed gets a far higher weighting in the overall score than which way you hold a bat two-handed (see this page for more information on how we did this).

While I am mostly left-handed I find I do most paper-cutting right-handed – but I have been known to switch to my more normal left hand on occasion; maybe next year’s test will include a few more ‘either/or’ options.

I’m surprised that musical instruments aren’t included here. I’ve been in bands since my teens and play drums and guitar left-handed. I’m pretty much ambidextrous for most things with a slight preference for one hand or the other depending on the task. I write with my right hand because when it came time to decide which hand to use, it made more sense to choose the right hand – given that we write from left to right. I only came in at 18% on this test, which is rather low considering.

I hate those right handed ergo scissors. I remember these lefties from like the 70s my aunts let me use, well they were old I know that. They were awful safety scissors.
Not sure i’ve seen lefty specific scissors, I just use ambidex ones.
my problem with scissors Is I always stick my fingers through the thumb hole and vice versa when i pick them up the first time. Not sure if that’s a lefty thing or not lol.

I mouse with my left hand, all other stuff, right handed.

Took the test and confirmed what I have known all my life. I discovered by accident that one can write with both hands at the same time, I have practiced writing backward and found it quite easy for one who is left handed, ( i e – DaVinci) playing around with pen and paper I discovered that one thought goes to both hands but is received differently the right hand will form letters as normally seen and the left hand will print letters in the reverse, this was not a science based observation but something I happened to find by accident. I would be willing to correspond with you on this if you find it to be important. I can expand on why I found this to be of interest. Thank You Don

I answered yes to everything and my score was only 89%…everything I do is with my left-hand..my right has always been on vacation. Also .. When I was in first grade, my teacher made me sit on my left hand and forced me to write with my right .. Causing me to write letters backwards and from right side of paper to left (but hey..hold it in front of a mirror.. It’s normal) 🙂 ..I had such a difficult time …My parents quickly took care of that situation but even today I can still write backwards.. We lefties are so unique 🙂

I’m 100% left-handed, but there’s an important question that should be on the test which would sort of skew my results.

I use the mouse with my right hand on computers that have only one mouse or controller. With systems with two mouses or mice (I built one), or with systems that have a game controller for one hand, I mouse with my LEFT hand.

And, I can do both simultaneously if need be (mouse with both hands at once.)

OBTW, there should also be a question which asks which foot do you step off with first when walking. LEFT for me…

  8. Margie says:

I was told I was left-sided, because the whole left side of my body – like arm, leg, foot, and, of course, hand is larger. Both my left ear and left eye is stronger. When I had lasik surgery, they had to force the computer to give me reverse mono-vision, because my left eye saw distance and my right eye saw close up – which is the opposite of everyone else! I found out shoes are bigger for the right foot – so, buying shoes became a problem. I usually wear sandals.

But, I’m perfectly fine with all of that. I love being left-handed, and wouldn’t want it any other way.

  9. Julia Cosgrove says:

I could not answer two of the questions as I am visually-impaired therefore I have not tried a telescope. Also, I have not seen a two-handed bat. Do remember those of us who are visually-impaired in future tests. However, I am 85% left-handed and, although I am 63 years of age, the education system at the time did seem to recognise left-handedness.

  10. Jerry MacMillan says:

I learned to bat right handed because no one was left handed to teach me. I do some things with my right arm because I broke both bones in my left wrist and it is not that strong anymore. I have always used right handed scissors left handed because I never even gave it a thought.
