When I was not even 2 years old, I remember sitting in the highchair eating with the spoon in my left hand. My mom walks by. Upon seeing which hand the spoon was in, she yanked it out and firmly placed it in my right hand.
I promptly put it back in my left hand. Of course, at that age, I didn’t have the gift of speech yet, but I remember being VERY ANGRY with her for doing that, and in my baby language, I told her, “That’s not my hand! I’m left-handed!” She never bothered me again about it.
Here is another one I like to call:
The Politics of Being Left-Handed
When I was in grade school, I was busy writing with my 😱 left hand! To make matters even worse, the paper was straight, 😱 not angled! Even more criminal… my left hand was 😱 straight!
The teacher walked by me, she, in all her wisdom, suddenly reached down and angled my paper. I looked at her and straightened it back. Admitting defeat, she simply walked away.
I could never understand why left-handers wrote with their hands crooked or always angled their papers when they wrote. It suddenly dawned on me that we lefties are indoctrinated to believe that our hands will smudge the ink when writing.
I’m here to say….. THAT’S RIDICULOUS!!! I have NEVER in my LIFE had that problem and this was back in the day when ink was easily smudged. Not ONCE did I smudge the ink. When I’m writing, not at anyone time is my hand touching what I’m writing. Not back then and not now.
This is just one of the ridiculous ways to make us, as left-handers, feel ‘different’, ‘inferior’. Think I’m exaggerating? I’ve observed this all my life and it makes me sad. If you are right-handed and you happen to see a young child who’s left-handed and has the audacity to NOT angle their paper while writing, don’t correct the child. The ink will not smudge. As I mentioned before, even in the day when ink was not quick-drying, my hand NEVER messed up what I was writing. My left hand is still straight while writing.

Could you please remove the meme regarding smudging? That would be greatly appreciated because it only serves to maintain the stereotype. Thanks!
